Snes - Rick Bowe Boxing Review

This is a boxing game based on a real boxer.  Not much else to say really.

Gameplay: 3/10
In the boxing ring, you'll have to box the enemy from a side view.  You can move towards or away for the enemy and you can use a left punch, right punch to either the head or the torso.  You can also block or you can choose to move to either side.  At the top you have a small boxing ring telling you where in the ring you are.  At the bottom you have two golden boxes each one underneath each boxer.  On the left of the box is a picture of the boxers
face while on the right is a picture of the boxers torso.  In the middle is
a red bar signalling the boxer's endurance or something like that.  To hurt an opponent, you have to keep hitting the opponent.  Keep it up and the opponent will take permenant damage.  This is indicated first of all by the appearance of a grey area in the red bar which prevents the opponent's edurance from rising.  Secondly, the pictures of the boxer's face and torso will have a line traveling down them colouring the picture indicating the amount of damage you've done to their health.  If the line reaches the bottom of the picture, you've won the match.  The more you pummel an area before and enemy has time to recover the more real damage you'll do.

While this might sound like a fairly alright system to implement in a boxin match, the lack of control really marrs everything.  I found myself mashing buttons relying on my boxer's speed to get the punches in.  It seems I have no real control over my boxer in terms of dodging attacks so I have to rely on his skill to get me close to the enemy.  I manage to get fairly high on the level chart before giving up on the game because of the mindlessness.
There just isn't any real incentive to keep playing.  Everyone has the same moves and it takes extremely long just to wear and opponent down. There's just no involvement in the real game.

Graphics: 2.5/5
The graphics here are fairly decent and you can customise your boxer to look asian or african.  Unfortunately all the punching and 'hit' animations are the same and there's no super moves or super animations.

Sound & Music: 0/5
Cheering sounds, punching sounds, announcer sounds.  Nothing even remotely memorable.

Playability and Versatility: 2/5
Unfortunately, there really isn't much playability or versatility in this
game although those that are present are actually alright.  Each player has Power, speed and endurance I believe determining their performance.
Inbetween matches in career mode you'll have the chance to train on various things such as a bicycle or skipping rope.  Some of them will increase one statistic will others will increase two but decrease one.  You can also have a 1 player or 2 player match but that's about it.

Options: 0/5
The only options are to change the keys.  That's it.

For: Nothing
Against: Poor graphics, poor gameplay, no real skill involved.
