Super Nintendo - Brainlord Review

Brainlord is an action-puzzle game with some rpg elements.

Gameplay and interface: 5/10

In the game, you control the main character Remeer from a top-down perspective.  The B button is the action or attack button allowing you to talk to people.  The A button is the cancel button.  When you do get spells, you will be able to cast them while holding the B button down.  The interface is fairly easy to use, you press the start button to bring the menu up and from there you can equip your weapons, spells.  All in all actual controls are fairly easy to use.  Later on, you'll get use different weapons such as the morning star and bow.  Each has their own own way of attacking the enemy.  For example, the sword covers you in front while the mace deals out more damage than any other weapon.  Aside from weapons, you also have fairies which can help you.  They range from healing fairies to fighting fairies but there aren't that many and they cost a lot in general.  They are useful however and they do level up by picking up an experience ball dropped by enemies occasionally.

What really annoys me is how Remeer fits in with the game.  The enemies move quite rapidly and for some reason your weapons don't do much against the enemies.  Secondly, there is the difficulty in jumping.  Jumping plays a huge part in the game and if you miss a jump you have restart from where you entered the room.

Storyline: 3.5/5

The storyline has you going off to look for a dragon in order to become a dragon warrior as your ancestors once were.  As you search for the dragon you are accompanied by other warriors and wizards who are all bounty hunters through the areas and later in the towns when you're done.  Although you can't use them in the game, as you finish areas your friends appear ahead of you giving the impression you're taking on the areas together.  This is fairly good method of telling the story as their comments change as you progress.  The story unfortunately is otherwise mediocre.

Graphics: 1.5/5

The graphics are fairly poor and not at all well-animated.  There isn't even anything unique about the enemies or areas portrayed in the game either.

Level design: 2.5/5

The level design isn't too bad except for the fact that you have to keep jumping in many of the areas which is down right annoying as I said before because if you fall you have to restart the level.  I feel that if the creators hadn't concentrated on the action parts and made this game a full puzzle game the results would have been much better as some of the puzzles are fairly interesting.

Music and Sound: 1/5

Horrible music and sound make this a boring adventure.

For: A few interesting puzzles.

Against: Everything else.
