Sega Genesis ~ the Ottifants Review |
|
Overview The Ottifants is some sort of comic or cartoon series in Europe about a family of Elephants. So common sense gets you make a video game out of it and quite often it is some very ordinary platform game that only appeals to fans of the TV show. As for everybody else, the questions arise "Is it any good? Good enough to waste a couple of bucks on?" Gameplay You take control of Bruno, some dufous looking two legged elephant who wears diapers, probably a baby elephant. In this game, you need to collect a certain percentage of coloured gummy bears depending on what level of difficulty you picked before you can advance levels. Bruno can shoot little balls out of his trunk that parabolically go up then down to kill off harmful things. If you hold down the shoot button, he can suck objects up to his trunk that can be used to help you out in some certain situations. So it's all pretty ordinary, there is nothing special about the gameplay. Same old boring platform game; collect those coloured things, finish a few levels, fight a big boss and maybe finish it even. 5 out of 10 Graphics The whole game looks very much like a colourful cartoon with some pretty decent animations, but nothing special. 3.75 out of 5 Sound and Music Like the graphics, the sound effects are like out of a cartoon. The first level has this silly toddlers tune, but from then on it sounds almost out of place with funky techno beats. Bruno himself doesn't say anything, except for when he says "OW!" after getting killed, making him seem rather inanimate. 2.75 out of 5 Game Design Nothing out of the ordinary here. The levels aren't particularly hard if you take your time. There are a few switches you will have to jump on to activate things like elevators. Other things include bouncy things to make you jump higher and rails to slide on. And like most other platform games, there are secret areas where you can collect screenfuls of gummy bears. 3 out of 5 Longevity There are a total of 6 levels. After beating a big boss, you are awarded with the level password to make things easier for you. The game will take a few days at the most to complete. But after completing it, you're unlikely to play the game ever again for any reason. 3 out of 5 For: cartoon-like graphics and sound, game isn't that hard, great for Ottifant fans. Against: ordinary platformer, ordinary level design, techno music seems out of place. If you're a fan of the Ottifants, then you might like this game. Otherwise, it'll be some boring old platform game where an unknown elephant can't bring about any excitement. |
