Sega Genesis - Alien Storm Review |
|
Alien Storm is an arcade game produced by sega which was brought over onto the Sega Megadrive. The game is a parody of all those alien invader movies right down to the cheesy aliens and weird looking alien-busting devices. Gameplay: 8/10 In Alien Storm you play either a robot, women or man attempting to destroy all the aliens invading earth. On the default controls, A has you use your special attack, B your normal attack and C your roll. You can also run by moving in the same direction twice and jump by running and pressing roll. When you attack, you don't do alot of damage, rather you have to keep attacking and as you do, your character will automatically switch to more powerful attacks. For example the robot will first attack with an electric whip but then use a blaster from his hand and finally pull his leg out and use it as a bazooka. The kind of attack used is dependent on the distance the enemy is from you as well as the condition of the enemy. If the enemy is on the floor for example, then you'll probably attack straight away with the blaster rather than the electric whip. Players of other beat'em ups might find this form of control somewhat odd but it works extremely well for most part. If you're stuck using the roll will allow you to roll past the enemies to the other side of the screen while the special attack will attack all the enemies on the screen at the cost of some energy. Aside from the side scrolling parts of the level you'll also be engaged in a scrolling shooter mode and a running mode similar to those side-scrolling aeroplane games. It's really cool and not only provides variety but in the case of the scrolling shooter mode a more personal view of the enemy. The only real complaints are the limited length of your attacks which means the enemies can often attack you. This is one of the big problems in the game I believe and really hurts the game because its hard to interrupt enemy attacks once they've started just like it's hard to stop your attacks once you've started. Graphics: 3.5/5 The graphics aren't that great unfortunately and it wasn't really cleaned up for the console. However, they do fit the game very well. Sound and Music: 3.5/5 Sound and music follow the cheesiness of the game itself having weird sounding retro-style music. Not great but weird enough to fit the game very well. Game design: 4.5/5 The varied sorts of gameplay in the game make the game extremely fun to play. Some might find the last level a little too hard and your life isn't replaced at all. You have to find medical kits to heal which can be really annoying especially if you die.just before you find one. For most part however it's pretty fair. This console also includes a duel function where two players can attack each other as well as a rapid fire function so you don't have to keep pressing the attack button during the shooting and running sequences. Longevity: 5/5 Alien storm is a great fun game to play with friends and will keep you occupied for a long time. It's a great classic game. For: Different kinds of gameplay. Real fun. Against: No replishing of life at the beginning of the level. Length of attack should be longer. |
