Game Boy - Star Wars Review |
|
Starwars is probably one of the most marketed Sci-fi movies of all time which is actually to its demise. There are just so many bad or mediocre starwars games around that just about every critic or reviewer cringes in fear when one comes out or else start going on about the force in an attempt to make the rather sad review funny. Unfortunately this is one of those bad games. Gameplay: 1/10 There are just so many things wrong with the gameplay. Let's start with the weapons. All your weapons are weak. So week in fact that it takes about 5 shots just to down a storm trooper, but being so weak and the storm trooper being so fast, unless you are firing as you run you'll probably get hurt. Speaking of which, the amount of life you have is pitiful and the damage you take horrendous. Even a touch will send you (literally) flying away, sometimes pass the edge of something and down to the lethal spikes below. What's worse is there do not seem to be any power ups nor way you can use the force and lives are far and few in between. Of course there are then the flying scenes where you have avoid rocks flying towards you. Rather then trying to avoid the very random rocks (a practically impossible task I might add) you just push to the diagonals (down right for example) and hope for the best. By doing this you can avoid all the rocks. Perhaps the only saving grace (which gave it the one point) is the high jumps you can make and the fairly slow drops which allow you to guide the character safely to a platform if you over shoot which is quite possible due to the small screen. Graphics: 4/5 Like most Starwars games, the graphics here are very sharp and relatively crisp for a Gameboy game. The level of detail is just amazing. Sound and Music 2.5/5 The sound and music are okay but are somewhat repetitive and after a while becomes very frustrating especially when you keep dying and having to replay the level. Game design: 0/5 While the platforms themselves are relatively well set out, there is an utter lack of direction in certain places of the games. For example the desert scene where you drive around in your speeder. You have to keep wandering around until you find a cave then enter in hopes that you will find R2D2. Then later on you have to traverse the lifts in the deathstar, another horrendous experience which will drain the will to live out of you. Not only are the corridors riddled with fast moving baddies some of them can't even be killed which means you have to avoid them before they even appear on the screen or risk getting hurt. Longevity: 0/5 It's doubtful that anyone would want to keep this game or even try to conquer it unless you're insane about Star wars. Otherwise keep away. For: Highly detailed graphics, jumps are just right for the Gameboy. Against: Everything else. |

The immortal picture of a Star destroyer chasing Princes Leia's ship. Looks impressive doesn't it? |

Lurking under the good graphics is the horrible "bad gameplay" monster. |
