Gameboy Color - Bomberman Max Review

These Bomberman games are two versions of the same game.  In one you can control Bomberman, the other Max.  Nearly all the levels are the same and the real game actually comes with an infrared device so you actually fire infrared beams at another gameboy colour rather than connecting with other players.

Gameplay: 8/10

Like any other Bomberman game, you go around controlling a character to plant timed bombs which will explode after some time.  The bombs will explode in a cross so you have to be careful where you stand.  You can get various power-ups such as to increase your speed and the explosive range of your bombs or to remote detonate the bombs.  There is even a warping power up where you can use the numbers on the television remote with the infrared device to jump levels. The maps in the game are fairly large and there is a great deal of variety in enemies and terrain hazards.  Each map has you completing a mission such as destroying a certain kind of enemy or rescuing charabons.  Once you've finished the mission a red and blue portal appear, each taking you to different levels.  Here's where the trouble starts because the level they take you to could be a level before or after the level you are at, there is no telling where you will be unless you've already played the level before.  Annoyingly enough this system also means you might end up having to complete a level you've been to before.

Aside from the main game the charabons you collect can be used to battle with other players.  Unfortunately I can't tell you what that does although I suppose it's fun.  Except for the portals there are no other real problems with the gameplay other than the fact that if you die you no longer keep your power-ups and the game is way too hard for casual gamers.

Replayibility and Longevity: 5/5

There are five planets with a huge number of stages, over twenty for each planet if you include the secret stages.  With the weird portal system, you don't have to play all of them to finish a planet.  There are also challenge levels where you have to destroy certain enemy types for example or you have to restart the level.  Finally, there are twenty different stages which are exclusive to each gameboy colour game and you have to get someone else with the different one to unlock it on your game.  All in all, if you love Bomberman games you will love the huge amount of levels.

Music and sound: 3/5

The music and sound are okay.  Cute and cartoonish to fit the game.

Graphics: 5/5

The graphics for this game are top-notch and everything looks great.  A lot of colour was used and everything is well drawn.

Difficulty and versatility: 4/5

With so many different levels and a wide variety of options, this game is great if you love Bomberman games although it is too hard as stated before.

For: Great bomberman game.

Against: Very hard.  Going to a new level is frustrating due to a weird portal system.  Not the kind of game to attract new players.
