Gameboy Color - Battle Tanx Review |
|
Battle Tanx is a top down game where you drive around in a tank blowing up enemies single-handedly. This game is doubtless a hat off to those tank games of the 1980's. Gameplay: 3/10 The game has two gameplay options, a story mode and battle mode. Both modes are nearly the same. The only difference is that in the story mode, you have play through the levels and are given a password at the end of each level. In battle mode you choose a level and your tank. That's the only difference, otherwise the missions and the story are exactly the same. This is of course very limited. There isn't even a two player mode. In the actual game itself you are looking top down at your tank on the map. There are three possible tanks. A green Moto tank, a blue M1A1 tank and a red Goliath tank. Each tank has its own strengths and weaknesses. The Moto tank is fast but very weak. The M1A1 tank is the 'middle' tank while the Goliath is slow but powerful. Pressing A or forward on the control pad will have you move forward while B fires the cannon. This is all good and well but here's where the trouble starts. The maps are unfortunately too cramped far much manuevering meaning all you really do is charge towards the enemy firing at it before it can damage you too much. This might sound suicidal but enemies almost always drop armour to refill your armour bar. There are a number of power-ups as well such as homing missiles and a bouncing attack however they are all weaker than your basic attack for your tank if you're the M1A1 or Goliath. In a way that sort of defeats the purpose of having the power-up since it's often better to use your main cannon than the power-up. There is a nuclear weapon which destroys all enemies on screen. Only problem is you can't save it or anything. You have to activate it before firing normal again. Graphics: 3.5/5 The graphics for each area are quite excellent. Each city has its own distinctive feel. There are even famous monuments such as the Washington monument. The most boring area is probably the desert with nothing but sand, hills and a few ruined signs. As for the units and enemies, there isn't anything really exciting about them unfortunately. Sound and Music: 2.5/5 Well, the music and sound is okay. Not too intrusive but not exactly great either. The music is very retro. Game design: 1.5/5 Unfortunately, the missions aren't varied enough. Despite the good graphics, the game's extremely boring gameplay mean there really isn't much in the way of excitement. It's mostly destroy all enemies although there are slightly different missions such as pickup all nuclear weapons. The homing missiles Longevity: 1/5 This game starts off okay but never gets any better. You'll start but probably never finish it because its just too boring. For: Graphics for each city are interesting Against: Power-ups are terrible, levels are boring, gameplay isn't varied enough |
