Gameboy Color - Army Men Sarge's Heroes 2 Review |
|
Army Men Sarge's Heroes 2 is the gameboy colour version of the game title of the same name. This is obviously not exactly the same although it is a top down isometric view like other Army Men games. The game revolves around Scorch, Riff, green army men of the Green Army and Vicki, the daughter of the Green Army colonel going around doing missions in different kinds of vehicles. These elite troops are under the command of Sergeant Hawk who is under the command of the colonel. Gameplay: 3/10 The game has you controlling one of three of Sarge's heroes, Scorch, Riff or Vicki in their respective vehicles. Scorch's vehicle is the middle of the bunch with fast speed and medium armour and firepower, Riff's is the slow moving powerhouse while Vicki's the fast but weak one. Each has two weapons, one unlimited shooter weapon and the other a limited rocket weapon. Both behave the same although the second weapon is more powerful but slower. As for vehicle choice, different missions will require you to drive different vehicles. For example, in the ocean missions you'll get to drive a jetski if you're Vicki or a hovercraft if you're Riff. As exciting as this variety sounds, the truth of the matter is it's sort of like choosing difficulty levels. Choosing Vicki being the hardest, Scorch being the average difficulty and Riff usually being the easiest. This of course varies depending on the mission but that's the rule of thumb. This imbalance means you end up choosing between Scorch and Riff leaving poor Vicki to one side which is a let down for those who wish to use a faster more agile person but don't want it to be too hard. Another real problem is the turning rate of the vehicles. Regardless of what you choose the whole game really boils down to how rapid you can turn to target enemies. This makes the game even more excruciating than it already is. Doding enemy fire is just as difficult because of this lack of manueverability. You just can't turn fast enough. Your best options are either to charge in and blow them up before they can turn to you or drive past them, turn and fire before they can turn to you. Graphics: 2/5 The graphics are boring and stale, even worse than Army Men Air Combat because of the blue, brown and green colours they use. They are functionally but that's about it. The comic strips between each missions are probably the highlight of the graphics. Sound and Music: 0/5 Music was strangely absent so I can't really comment but the sound is boring and crackly. There's really no redeeming features of this. Game design: 1.5/5 Here's another big failure of the game. The missions either involve you blowing everything up, or protecting something and blowing things up. But the poor gameplay makes killing enemies a chore and even more reptitive than usual. The slow turning speed of enemies makes the beginning of the game boring while the lack of any real way to fight effectively limits interest. Furthermore, the large amount of missions really make the game drag on. The most exciting bits to me were the talking in between the missions. Longevity: 1/5 You'll play this game for the fun of piloting different kinds of vehicles but probably not get past the first five levels when you realise that the game is boring. If you get to the higher levels such as level 20, the enemies do respond faster which makes the game even more frustrating to play as you realise your vehicles are just too slow to turn or too lightly armoured. For: Different vehicles to use. Against: Everything else. |
