Gameboy Color - Antz Review |
|
Antz is a platform action game based on the movie of the same name and follows the movie for most part. Gameplay: 9/10 As in most action platform games, you play the hero of the movie, Zee and have to go around performing missions. Usually find someone in the level. Moving around is easy as is jumping and crouching down. You can also move while crouching down, as well as cling to ledges or swing back and forth on certain handholds. Jumping is a little floaty but it fits the game quite well because of the limited size of the scream. To defeat enemies, you can throw your limited amount pickaxes at them or jump on some of the weaker ones. You start off with two lives at the beginning of the game and whenever you finish a level you start with the same amount you ended with. If you get hurt you'll lose a life and get thrust back. There is only one instant death sequence which is when you fall into the water which is great. No complaints on the handling of the main character. Graphics: 4/5 The graphics for such as game are quite clear and colourful and the backgrounds very well-designed. Everything is clear and what is able to be interacted with such as platforms and ledges are clearly demarkated. Some of the backgrounds do get a little repetitive however. Sound and Music: 5/5 The music is pulled straight out of the movie I believe. No complaints here and it definitely fits the game. There isn't really any sound except for the generic sort of sounds but that's alright. Game design: 4/5 I have to say this is one of the more well designed platformers of the gameboy colour. Levels are fairly large, not huge, and for most part where the next platform or ledge is. There are very rare instances where you have to go for a 'leap of faith' where you're left wondering how in the world you were suppose to know where to jump next. What really helps the game even more are the flying levels where you ride another insect and the water levels where you have to follow a floating leaf. Both of which are 'classic' action sequences but which help break the monotony of the jumping. There are three major problems with the game however. One, your life is not replenished to full after a level which is annoying after you've fought a boss. Two, the game ends way too soon with no real ending although there are about twenty levels and three, you have to collect three keys to get the password for each level. Longevity: 3/5 Antz will last you a fair bit and be fairly enjoyable but it's a plain simple well-balanced platformer. Nothing more or less nor does it try to be. It does exactly what it sets out to do. For: Good control, good level design. Against: Life not restored at the beginning of new level. Must collect password keys to get password. No last boss fight. |
